PVC vs CPVC Pipe: Cold Water, Hot Water & Temperature Limits

Standard PVC is for cold water and drainage only — it is rated to about 60°C and loses most of its pressure rating near that point. CPVC is chlorinated for heat and handles roughly 93°C, so it is the correct choice for residential hot-water lines. Never run hot water through standard PVC.

Can I use PVC for hot water?
No. Standard PVC is rated to about 60 °C and its pressure capacity falls sharply as it heats, so hot water can warp or crack it. Use CPVC, PPR or PEX for hot lines.
Do PVC and CPVC use the same cement?
No — CPVC needs its own solvent cement formulated for the material. Using PVC cement on CPVC can produce weak joints.
