Ball Valve

A ball valve is a quarter-turn shut-off valve that uses a bored spherical ball to open or close flow. A 90-degree handle turn moves it fully open to fully closed, giving tight sealing and low flow resistance, which makes it the standard isolation valve in residential plumbing.

⚠️ Note: Repeated partial-opening (throttling) accelerates seat wear — use for isolation, not flow control.

FAQ

Can a ball valve throttle flow?
It is designed for full open or full closed and is not ideal for throttling, because partial opening can wear the seat and cause noise. Use a globe or angle valve where flow regulation is needed.
How do I know if a ball valve is open?
When the lever is in line with the pipe the valve is open; when the lever is perpendicular to the pipe it is closed.
