Gate Valve

A gate valve is an isolation valve that raises or lowers a flat or wedge-shaped gate to open or close flow. It is designed for fully open or fully closed service, offering low resistance when open, and is used for main-line shut-off rather than flow regulation.

⚠️ Note: For isolation only — throttling erodes the gate and seat. Long-idle gate valves can seize; exercise periodically.

Why should a gate valve not be used for throttling?
A partially open gate causes turbulence that can erode the gate and seat and may vibrate. Keep it fully open or fully closed and use a globe or throttling valve to regulate flow.
What does a rising stem indicate on a gate valve?
On a rising-stem valve the stem moves up as the valve opens, giving a visual indication of position; non-rising stem valves save space but do not show position externally.
