A PV combiner box consolidates several parallel DC strings into one main circuit feeding the inverter, while housing per-string protection. It typically integrates string fuses or breakers, a DC surge protection device and a load-break DC isolator in an outdoor-rated enclosure built to IEC 61439.

When is a combiner box needed?

It is used when multiple PV strings run in parallel and need to be joined and individually protected before the inverter — typical on larger or multi-string arrays. Small single- or dual-string systems may connect directly to the inverter.

What does the DC surge protection device (SPD) do?

The SPD diverts voltage transients (for example from nearby lightning) to earth, protecting the inverter and wiring. It is a sacrificial device that should be inspected and replaced when its status indicator shows it has operated.
