Solar Breaker

A solar (DC) breaker provides overcurrent protection and manual switching for PV circuits. Unlike AC breakers, PV DC breakers are polarised and use enhanced arc-extinguishing to safely interrupt continuous DC. They are used in combiner boxes and at inverter DC inputs, built to IEC 60947-2.

⚠️ Note: Observe the marked polarity and DC voltage rating exactly; never open a DC breaker under fault load beyond its breaking capacity, and isolate the array before working.

Typical specification

PropertyTypical value
TypeDC miniature circuit breaker (MCB) / moulded-case breaker, polarised, DC-rated
RatingCommon ratings ~6–63 A; select above string current and below cable/fuse limits
DC voltageTypical rating up to 1000 V or 1500 V DC (often via series poles)
ProtectionDC overcurrent and short-circuit protection plus manual load-break isolation
StandardIEC 60947-2 (circuit breakers); DC-specific rating and polarity required

FAQ

Can an AC breaker be used on a solar DC circuit?
No. DC does not have a zero-crossing, so arcs are harder to extinguish; DC breakers are polarised and specially constructed to interrupt DC safely. Using an AC-only breaker on a PV DC circuit is a fire and shock hazard.
Why are DC breakers polarised?
Their arc-quenching design depends on current flowing in a defined direction, so line and load terminals and polarity must be wired exactly as marked; reversed connection can prevent safe interruption.
